What is Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (ADPAN)?

The Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (ADPAN) was set up in Hong Kong following a Consultative Meeting organized by Amnesty International in July 2006 and officially launched throughout the Asia Pacific Region on World Day Against the Death Penalty, 10 October 2006. ADPAN is an independent informal network with 51 members made up of individuals and organizations mainly from the Asia-Pacific Region. Members are committed to working for the abolition of the Death Penalty within the Asia Pacific Region. The network is not linked to any political party or religion and is independent of all governments. Members include lawyers, parliamentarians and activists from 23 countries:
Australia, Bangladesh, Fiji, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea (South), Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Tonga, UK, USA.

ADPAN is an informal network of individuals and organizations and its work is coordinated for the time being by Amnesty International. Membership of ADPAN involves commitment to the abolition of the death penalty in the Asia Pacific region and members are asked to:

    • participate and campaign in actions aimed at the abolition of the death penalty in countries from the Asia Pacific region,
    • send appeals for the commutation of death sentences,
    • publicise relevant information through organizing of events,
    • share information amongst ADPAN members
    • participate in meetings where possible.
