Good News from Philippines: Community worker released without charge

Ruel Munasque (m), aged 33, Christian community worker

Ruel Munasque was released after a petition for his release was heard at the Regional Trial Court in Pagadian City, in Zamboanga del Sur province, Mindanao Island, on the evening of 7 November. There were no charges brought against him.

Ruel Munasque had been held in military custody at an unknown location since 24 October. It is not known if he was tortured or ill-treated. Ruel is a leader of Christian Youth Fellowship and community development worker for the United Church Christ in the Philippines. He was illegally detained by the military, possibly du to his membership of Bayan Muna, a political party that has been described by the military as a ‘front’ organisation for the banned Communist Party of the Philippines.

Many thanks to all those who sent appeals.
